Hong Kong Airport Services Limited (HAS by Cathay) and Cathay Cargo Terminal today announced they have jointly commenced piloting the use of Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) as an alternative fuel for Ground Service Equipment (GSE), underscoring both companies' commitment to decarbonisation.
HVO is a renewable diesel alternative that offers a cleaner combustion process, reducing over 80% of lifecycle carbon emissions compared to traditional diesel fuel. HAS by Cathay is the first Ramp Handling Operator (RHO) at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) to utilise HVO.
HAS by Cathay Chief Operating Officer Maggie Wong said: "Ramp handling equipment is one of the major contributors to ground-based carbon emissions at HKIA. We are proud to be the first ramp handler in Hong Kong to take this step towards a cleaner fleet".
Cathay Cargo Terminal Chief Operating Officer, Mark Watts said: "We have already electrified forklifts and cars at our cargo terminal, but our cargo tow-tractors are not yet electrified. The HVO pilot is an excellent interim step to ensure we can reduce our environmental impact faster."
